ALLAHABAD: At a time when Allahabadies are making last minute preparations for making their Christmas celebrations special, markets of the Sangam city are buzzing with hectic activities. Among various items, Santa gown and accessories that goes with the dress, are the most sought item.

Be it the roadside shops in the posh civil lines locality or the smaller shops of the markets like Chowk and Katra, enthusiastic buyers can be spotted at every shop. There are several items which are ready to be picked up by the youngsters who are purchasing these items for the Christmas party, organised by them.

It was not that the buyers were from Christian community alone as Christmas has become one festival which is equally popular among the non-Christian community. "This is one festival which gives us an opportunity to celebrate with our family and friends, exchange gifts and advance wishes for the new year," said Ranjana, a students of CMP Degree college of the city.
Among the verities of decorative items that are available in the markets, the life-size stuff toy of Santa Claus, and that too playing a saxophone, is the most popular item. Christmas tree, of various sizes, ornamental decorative items, glass balls, glass eggs, wooden balls, handmade Santas, ornament dolls and many more including costly items and souvenirs are being sold in these roadside shops.

Likewise, toys and greeting cards were also among the most sought after items among people of different ages visiting the markets for Christmas shopping. "Although the sale of cards have declined in the last five years, but this is one festival which attract the card lovers as this is time of dual celebration, Christmas and New Year and people tend to think that Christmas shopping and shopping for gifts is the same thing", said Vivek a salesmen of a card selling outlet.
Similarly, bakeries of the city were also bust meeting out the orders of the cake, pastry and gift hampers for Christmas. "Every year my daughter wants me to become Santa and distribute gifts, toffees and other items to the children of the slums", said Sandeep Kumar, a local.
