Dev Anand

Dharam Devdutt Pishorimal Anand or Dev Anand as he was commonly known was a multi-faceted personality, who could act, write, produce and direct with equal ease.

He was born on September 26, 1923 in the Shakargarh tehsil of the Gurdaspur district in Punjab (present-day Narowal district of Pakistan).

Dev Anand's journey to stardom wasn't easy. Before becoming an established star he worked as a clerk in an accountancy firm for a paltry salary of Rs 85 to make ends meet. He also worked at the Military Censor Office and earned Rs 160.

Ashok Kumar's performance in movies like Achhut Kanya and Kismat inspired Dev Anand to become an actor. Interestingly, it was Ashok Kumar who gave Anand his first big break as a hero. Kumar spotted him hanging around studios and offered him Ziddi (1948) opposite Kamini Kaushal.

Dev Anand is credited with introducing some of the finest young actors in the industry that included Zeenat Aman and Tina Munim.

He passed away in his room at The Washington Mayfair Hotel in London at the age of 88 on December 3, 2011 (December 4, 2011 by Indian Standard Time) of a cardiac arrest.
