 vijay bahuguna

Nehru made a tryst with Destiny on the midnight of August 14-15 in 1947. For many, many people dwelling on the banks of the Ganga and for millions living millions of kilometres away, Ganga is their River of Destiny both from practical and spiritual angles. Vijay Bahuguna, like his late father Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna , sister Rita and brother Shekhar, hails from the hills no doubt. But Allahabad has been his home for years, decades.

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that he too has been in the real sense a ‘Chora Ganga kinare wala’ because he grew up here to imbibe the secular ideals of our Ganga-Jamni culture in order to become a dedicated son of India and a worthy son of a worthy father. He heads Uttarakhand as its Chief Minister but his love for Allahabad is as deep as his devotion for the Ganga which has strengthened his resolve to assure good governance to his State. Ganga has been polluted in Allahabad and elsewhere in UP because of the factories and tanneries on its banks near the big cities. But Vijay has expressed his deep commitment to the protection of Ganga waters. It was Vijay’s tryst with the destiny of Ganga. We hope he will fulfil it. He attended a programme led by Swami Chidanand Saraswati, Founder of Ganga Action Parivar and President of Parmarth Niketan Ashram. Swami Chidanandji and Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji gave him a detailed ‘request list’ regarding ways to keep Ganga pure. It would be interesting to watch how the son of Allahabad who is also son of Uttarakhand soil, reconciles the interests of his home state with the state of which his father was once a Chief Minister, one of the most successful ones. Let us now wait and watch how Vijay’s tryst with Ganga works.
