dark clouds

As was predicted by the weather people, we did get rain on Basant Panchmi. But a day later, on Saturday morning, one just couldn’t believe what one saw. It suddenly turned dark round 9.30 am or so—and several times thereafter. Electricity supply had been cut off because of the downpour which was not continuous but was coming with fits and starts. It happened then. Darkness swooped all around, as if there was ‘power failure’ in the heavens too. Could it be the doomsday? Asked Raja Zutshi, the broadcaster-cum-poet and script writer. He was probably thinking of some plot to dwell. But Principal Jagati from across the river said that the darkness at noon reminded him of a Mahabharat episode. However, before he could give details the phone went dead. Principal Saxena’s thunder was louder than even the deafening thunder from the skies.”There is complete chaos’, he shouted. The phone went dead. This time the authorities were apparently prepared. But lashing showers, intermittently though, did put out of gear the normal pace of traffic on the roads, to say nothing of the discomfort caused by water-logging even where drains had supposedly been laid.

I may cite the example of the crossing of Sarojini Naidu Marg and Elgin Road near Head Post Office. Although the drain was there but water had got accumulated on Elgin Road near the HPO boundary. The pedestal type footpath raised there was not allowing the water to reach the drain. The road planners ought to have made provision for outlet of water from there. Problem of water-logging surfaced at several other places too, especially in the low-lying areas. One hopes that the matter will be looked into soon.
I may however alert all those who might be getting wet in this rain that they must immediately wipe themselves dry so as not to catch chill. The problem will indeed be acute, may be more psychological than real, for those who are caught midway on roads and cannot get to an early shelter. I may also say that because of the swine-flu scare, people are rushing to hospital even if they are suffering from common cold. Symptoms initially are the same. Experts agree that hand-washing can help prevent viral infections, including ordinary and the swine flu infections. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with hands. This will help to prevent the flu. Influenza can spread through coughs or sneezes, but an increasing body of evidence shows that small droplets containing the virus can linger on tabletops, telephones and other surfaces and that these can be transferred via the fingers to the eyes, nose or mouth. Alcohol-based gel or foam hand sanitizers work well to destroy viruses and bacteria. Anyone with flu-like symptoms, such as a sudden fever, cough or muscle aches, should stay away from work or public transportation and contact a doctor for advice.
