Hazrat Imam Husain sacrificed for God and fulfilled the sacrificial mission of Hazrat Isma’il.  The Almighty God in his Holy book the Noble Qur’an in Chapter known as “Saffat” says; “And we ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice and we left him among generations (to come) in later times. Peace be upon Abraham.  Thus indeed do we reward who do right.” (CH: 37, V: 107-110).

Allah Allah Baey Bismillah pidar

Ma'niye zibh-e-azim a’mad pisar

This couplet was composed by Allama Iqbal. He had an abiding faith in Ahlul Bayt (the Chosen Descendants of the Holy Prophet). In a state of supreme bliss Dr Iqbal says, "O' Allah, what an exalted position Imam Husain possessed, as his illustrious father (Imam Ali) was the first letter of the Qur'an! A tradition says that Imam Ali said, "What is in the Holy Qur'an is in the first chapter (Surah Fatiha); what is in this surah (chapter) is in the first verse (Bismillah); what is in Bismillah is in its first letter (Ba) and I am the dot below ba. Doubtless Imam Ali was acknowledged to be the best expounder of the Holy Qur'an.

The Holy Prophet had himself declared: "Ali is with Qur'an, and Qur'an is with Ali". Imam Husain was the son of such an eminent personality. It is Imam Husain’s Martyrdom which is referred to as Zibhe Azim the greatest sacrifice in the Holy Qur'an. Imam Husain was the direct descendant of Prophet Isma’il and had offered himself for sacrifice at Karbala to save Islamic principles from annihilation.

The Holy Qur'an says that Zibhe Azim, the great sacrifice of Prophet Isma’il was left over for the coming generation. Dr Iqbal alludes to this and says that Zibhe Azim in the Holy Qur'an means the sacrifice of Imam Husain.

An Imam-e-ashiqan pooray Batool

Sarvay azadi ze bustan-e-Rasul

Now Dr Iqbal opens his praises for the son of Lady Fatema. He was the chief of the lovers of Allah, and an evergreen tree from the garden of the Prophet. Imam Husain who stood against the forces of evil, refused to acknowledge Yazeed as the Caliph of Islam, and upholding the dignity of Islamic principles sacrificed his life along with a small group of 72 of his followers, at the battlefield of Karbala.

Muharram ul Haram is the continuation of the Hazrat Ibrahim’s sacrifice. With the advent of this holy month, the mourners and followers of Imam Husain, grandson of the prophet and son of Lady Fatema and Hazrat Ali, begin a chain of Majalis (Mourning Discourses) and mourning processions. The participants of these gatherings remember the contented soul of Imam Husain who along with his 72 diehard followers and family members achieved a great success while sacrificing themselves in the way of God Almighty.

I am picked up the story down to the 60th year of the Hijri.  When Yazeed assumed the power at Damascus. He cared nothing for the most sacred ideals of the people. He was not even interested in the ordinary business affairs of administration. His passion was hunting, and he sought power for self-gratification.

The discipline and self-abnegation, the strong faith and earnest endeavour, the freedom and sense of social equality which had been the motive forces of Islam, were divorced from power. The throne at Damascus had become a worldly throne based on the most selfish ideas of personal and family aggrandisement, instead of a spiritual office, with a sense of God-given responsibility. The decay of morals spread among the people.

There was one man who could stem the tide. That was Imam Husain. He, the grandson of the Prophet, could speak without fear, for fear was foreign to his nature. But his blameless and irreproachable life was in itself a reproach to those who had other standards. They sought to silence him, but he could not be silenced.

They sought to bribe him, but he could not be bribed. They sought to waylay him and get him into their Power. What is more, they wanted him to recognise the tyranny and expressly to support it.

Imam Husain in his reply said: we are household of prophet and essence of prophet-hood, angels come to our home, Allah showers his blessings on us, Allah started Islam from our home (this points to the time when the Prophet (PBUH) addressing the people announced his prophet-hood and said that Oh, people recite Kalma so that you become successful), our home is with Islam forever and will remain so (this points towards Hadees-e-Saqalain in which the Prophet (PBUH) made his will that Oh, people I am leaving Qur’an and my Ahle Bayt among you and guarantee that you will never be misled if you keep yourself attached with them and these two will never separate from each other unless they reach me at Hauz-e-Kausar). But the character of Yazeed is that he is a drunkard, murderer of innocent respected people, tramples commandments of Allah, commits debauchery openly, a person like me cannot give allegiance to a person like Yazeed.

Hazrat Imam Husain, during his conversation, made his point of view clear that he considers Yazeed an oppressor and Imam could be the one who, in the light of Ibrahim’s prayer, is not an oppressor. Then he enumerated the good qualities of his family that are stated in Hadees. The Imam also highlighted the foremost objective of his struggle that is to root out those powers who desire to damage the world peace.

Imam Husain is that greatest person about whose purity, the Qur’anic verse of Tatheer stands witness. On this basis Imam Husain bin Ali sacrificed in way of Allah and the blessings of Allah remained with him. He chose martyrdom with full awareness and liking. He proved through his character that he has accepted martyrdom for the dignity of mankind and the supremacy of the religion and Shariat (Divine Law). The invaluable sacrifice presented by Hazrat Imam Husain along with his 72 diehard companions and offspring was not for any particular group, family or area but only and only for the respect of mankind, dignity of humanity and survival of Shariat. That is why every human being should consider Husain as the source of his survival.

As a matter of fact all students of history are aware that the horrors that are connected with the great event of Karbala’ did more than anything else to unite together the various contending factions which had unfortunately appeared at that early stage of Muslim history. An Old Persian saying applied to the Prophet:

“Tu barae wasl kardan amadi; Ni barae fasl kardan amadi”.

“Thou had comes to the world to unite, not to divide.”

Battle of Karbala was a momentous historic event, in which were exemplified such soul-stirring virtues as those of unshaken faith, undaunted courage, thought for others, willing self-sacrifice, steadfastness in the right and unflinching war against the wrong.

Interestingly, in the Preface of his famous historical novel, titled Karbala, published in 1924 from Lucknow, Munshi Prem Chand has stated that the Hindus, who fought and sacrificed their lives in the holy war of Karbala, are believed to be the descendants of Ashvathama. This clearly establishes their link with the Datts who consider Ashvathama as an ancestor of their clan.

In the Torah the martyrdom of Imam Husain is prophesized that on the banks of Euphrates a big sacrifice will occur.  The Holy Prophet had also time and again prophesized the martyrdom of Imam Husain.  When we say that Imam Husain completed the mission of all prophets by it we mean that Imam Husain rejected despotism and stood for divine values such as peace, justice, nobility and freedom.
