Christian Dior sister, Catherine Dior was born on August 2, 1917, in Granville, Manche, France.
She was born to Maurice Dior (father) and Madeleine Dior (mother). Her father was a fertilizer industrialist while her mother was a housewife.
Catherine had four siblings, Raymond, Jacqueline, Bernard, and the couturier Christian Dior. After the death of her mother in 1931, the Dior family settled in Callian, near Grasse in Provence in 1932.
With the bankruptcy of the Dior factories and the 1929 financial crash, Catherine supported her family’s survival by growing green beans and peas.
Catherine Dior a Resistance Fighter during World War II
Catherine Dior met founding Resistance member Herve des Charbonneries in November 1941 while shopping in Cannes. Dior joined him and began to involved with the “Massif Central” section of the F2 network.
Later, she became in charge of transmitting clandestine reports to London. Dior along with 26 other persons of the group were arrested on July 6, 1944, and were tortured by the Gestapo (secret police of Nazi Germany).
Dior was transferred from Ravensbruck to the military prison of Torgau to work on the production of explosives in a disused potassium mine.
Later on April 19, 1945, Dior was captured by the US Army and was liberated near Dresden then returned to Paris on May 28, 1945.
In 1952, Dior testified in a trial against 14 people responsible for the Gestapo office in Paris. For her work, she was awarded several medals of honors.
She received the Combatant Volunteer Cross of the Resistance, the Combatant’s Cross, and the King’s Medal for Courage in the Cause of Freedom, and was named a Chevaliere of the Legion of Honour.

After the end of World War II, Catherine Dior became a representative of cut flowers. She worked trading flowers from the south of France and the French colonies.
Dior traded flowers to Callian, Provence, buying there a rose farm for the production of fragrance.
Catherine released the fragrance, Miss Dior on February 12, 1947, at the first fashion show of the company giving her name to it.
Catherine Dior Death and Legacy
Catherine Dior died on June 17, 2008, in Callian at the age of 90. She was buried near her brother Christian Dior.
In remembrance of Catherine, Maria Grazia Chiuri in September 2019 dedicated the Spring-Summer 2020 Ready-to-Wear runway collection to Catherine Dior, inspired by her passion for flowers.
