Till the other day, when Mr SS Majithia rang me up from Mehdauri, street lights had not been restored in several parts of the locality. This, he said, had become a source of big worry. He says: ‘Formerly it used to be daylight even at 5am but now, in winter, even at 6am it is fairly darak. And if it is foggy visibility becomes very poor.

I asked him whether he was finding it difficult to go out on morning walk? He replied: ;No. Not I.  But our maid servants , who work in several households, do not feel safe’. He says, ‘They have to come early in the morning. Now some of them are complaining that they are afraid of Roadside Romeos who could be harassing them. I told him: ‘I am sure they are all elderly women with children and grand children. What are they afraid of?’ He replied:’Don’t you realise that they are all covered up. But their sari is visible and that indicates their sex. The rest doesn’t matter for these sex maniacs’. I told him: ‘But if these women could be of the age of their  mothers, why would they tease them?’ He re[plied ‘Because some of them are mother specialists’. He went on: ‘You are a journalist. Haven’t you read those extreme cases about a young man raping a woman of 90 and another seducing a woman of 60?” He said, ‘They are not safe. ‘  He trhen said, ‘But that was by teh way. I am talking about the safety and security of everybody. And how can this be assured if lights are off? Even if a woman is brave enough to  challenge  the man, how will she b able to recognise him in dark?’
Well, Mr Majithia has given so many arguments. And since in almost every posh household, maid servants are engaged, this problem of darkness scaring away the maids may always persist. And while concluding I asked Mr Majithia: ‘Assuming that yoyur area is well lighted. But if in the locality where the maid servant lives there is darkness, how will she then come?” He replied: ‘In their own mohalla they are not afraid.’
