The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning against the same mosquito becoming the source of both Dengue and Chikungunya fevers at the same time. WHO says that this co-infection poses a challenge for accurate diagnosis and treatment particularly when symptoms like fever and aches can be similar in several diseases.

My plea to all our readers is to personally take precautionary measures to eliminate away mosquito-breeding spots from your compound or even in the neighborhood. This is the minimum we can do but it may not be sufficient to ward off the new, dual threat. Hence it is essential that the District administration directs the health department to carry out a rigorous anti-mosquito campaign by resorting to fogging on a big scale with latest insecticides and not liquids that have long past the expiry date. It is better to spend on prevention than to be fleeced after an epidemic has broken out.
