DGPS Alert

DGP Devraj Nagar was in Allahabad the other day in connection with a court case. He utilised this opportunity to acquaint himself with the state of law and order in the city. He has very rightly alerted the police to exercise extra vigil during the festive season which will start with the advent of Navratras. The city will be abuzz with Durga Puja  and Dussehra celebrations.

The atmosphere will be one of relaxation. But this is the time when the hoodlums or the anti social elements or the criminals if not terrorists choose to attack  merry makers, taking them by surprise. Those with sinister intentions try to cause damage too. Anything amiss can happen. Hence the police will have to remain on their toes, initiating  horse-back patrolling apart from placing men of intelligence at strategic positions and cops with and without uniform to thwart any attempt by the disrupters of peace to create trouble. The posting of women constables near temples will also create a sense of confidence among the female devotees who throng the places of worship in large numbers.
The DGP should be commended for  sanctioning  Rs 10 lakh to the district police for the installation of at least 10 CCTV cameras at strategic points  before the Puja festivities begin. But I would like to warn that the criminals could have an eye on these CCTV cameras and may try to damage or destroy them or make them in-operational so that they may not be able to record their misdeeds. The police department will have to specially protect these CCTV cameras from the evil intentions of such characters.
Only recently there was a report that the city police has plans to install CCTV cameras at 200 important spots in the city so as to record any untoward happening that may take place in the area covered  by these proposed cameras. I may state that since these cameras will  record even the unpermitted activities of some cops, the policemen in many cases may not be very happy about their installation. It is not uncommon to see cops sometimes dead drunk. They are on duty but are seen moving about in a zig-zag manner, sometimes even indulging in eve-teasing as it happened the other day in Fatehpur where one policeman tried to act funny with a girl who had gone to meet her under-trial brother. She shouted and was seen crying. Lawyers around thrashed the erring cop. This picture has appeared in some papers.
