Rotarian Prof(Dr) Saad Usmani, former Principal of Unani Medical College, Allahabad and a Unani physician from a reputed House of Hakims was honoured in Delhi by  an ‘Institutional Award’ at the International Conference  on Multidisciplinary Healthcare, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi on Jan12 ,2014 for his exceptional contributions and years of dedicated service in the field of  Unani Medicine.

The honour was conferred on him by Mr Nilanjan Sanyal, Secretary AYUSH,  Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. We congratulate him.
Prof Usman is also instrumental in successfully striving for tabling the proposal for the establishment of   All India Institute of Unani Medicine(on AIIMS pattern) at Ghaziabad. Dr Usmani was a member of the Committee constituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to review this concept. The proposal has been accepted in principle and budgetary provision for Rs 40 crore  made  in the current annual plan. This Institute would offer post-graduate and doctoral courses in various disciplines of Unani medicine and focus on fundamental research. This would indeed be a big gain.
I may reveal another quality of his. He is  well versed in Urdu literature  and has referred to glaring omissions in our article ‘Candles of Urdu’ (Sunday Mag-5 January 2014on Allahabad poets )and says some of the most famous names of Allahabad Urdu poets have been omitted such as Padamashri Prof Shamsur Rahman Farooqui, winner of Gyanpeeth Award and author of over 50 books including the world famous ‘Kaeen chand the saare  aasman’. Humdoon Usmani’s ghazals and nazmas  were appreciated by Firaq Gorakhpuri and Sardar Jafri in a TV interview. He passed away on 9th April 1992, Dr  Inam Hanifi, basically a Botanist is well known for his Dewan ‘Lafzon ka Parvaz’, Ehteram Islam has written both Urdu and Hindi poetry. How could your (unknown) correspondent forget  Sukhdev Prasad (Bismil Allahabadi), practising advocate in Allahabad High Court who stirred the nation through his patriotic songs?
