Ahmedabad, Nov 18: Maulana, the Asiatic lion who shared screen with Amitabh Bachchan in the Gujarat tourism advertisement died at the age of 16. The lion was undergoing treatment for 10 days before it died.


Maulana, who co starred Big B in the ‘Khusboo Gujarat ki’ advertisement, was among 8 lions which featured in commercial. Reportedly, he was one of the oldest lions in Gir sanctuary, a home for more than 500 lions.
Maulana and his brother Topu reportedly ruled over their territory for a long time, while most of the male lions generally rule for three years at the maximum. According to forest officials, Maulana and Topu ruled over 39 lionesses and cubs.
Earlier this month, another old lion, Ram, died at the age of 16. According to chief conservator of forest P. Singh the lion was called Maulana because of his appearance.
Amitabh Bachchan in his blog mentions his excitement on seeing the lions and not just one but eight of them. He describes their behaviour in his blog.
Amitabh Bachchan has not commented or tweeted anything yet regarding the death of Maulana, at least the lion will remain as an icon of Gujarat tourism, thanks to the advertisement.
